How to Create Safety by Listening to Your Nervous System with Brian Donahoe
Jun 23, 2021 Episode 48
Kat Lee

I often get asked “How do I get over my stress/overwhelm/anxiety/depression?”

Folks are looking for me to tell them exactly which protocol or modality to help them get out of their funk. “Is cognitive behavioural therapy the answer?”

 “Should I try reiki?”

“How about a therapist who is trained in internal family system?”

“What about acupuncture?”

My answer is this: As a healing community, we put too much emphasis on modalities and less on what will actually help relieve suffering. The bad news is that there is no magical cure or modality that will save us all (and be very cautious of practitioners who tell you that they’ve got the answer).

The good news is that the key to healing from stress/anxiety/depression is actually quite simple. Are you ready for it?

It’s safety.

Let’s break that down a bit…

Safety happens when you have pattern-breaking experiences that allow your nervous system to feel that what was previously scary is no longer scary. This happens in safe environments and safe relationships. And your nervous system is the part of you that leads this entire experience. When your nervous system feels safe, choices open up where things were previously binary, you’re able to feel curious instead of threatened and you have the capacity to feel expansive instead of stifled.

Listen to this episode if..

You know you’re stressed/overwhelmed/anxious/depressed and want to understand how your nervous system is the key to unraveling these patterns

What You'll Learn in this Episode:

  • A breakdown of the nervous system and how it is the regulator of stress and trauma
  • The necessary integration of  the body and emotions in trauma work
  • Why modalities are not as important as the relationship to safety when it comes to treating the nervous system
  • The physiology and spiritual needs of sleeping
  • The importance of building strength and resilience through challenge - why we need to go through “Act 2”
